§ 1
What does 245/75R16 measure?
By the formula, the sidewall measures 7.2 in (184 mm), and the rim diameter is 16 in (406 mm). Nominal circumference is 95.7 in (2,431 mm), giving 662 revolutions per mile (411 per km). These are unloaded nominal dimensions, not measurements of a particular tire.
§ 2
What do tire makers publish?
The published-measurements table covers 20 tires from 4 brands: Kumho, Firestone, Nitto and Toyo. It includes 12 LT and 8 P-metric or passenger versions, with SL, XL and E load ranges.
Those makers list diameters from 30.1 in to 30.7 in, compared with 30.47 in by the formula before rounding. Listed weights range from 31.4 lbs to 52 lbs, and new tread depths range from 10/32 in to 19/32 in. The examples below are LT245/75R16, load range E.
- Kumho lists the Crugen HT51 at 30.1 in diameter, 41.9 lbs and 12/32 in tread depth.
- Firestone lists the Winterforce LT at 30.47 in diameter, 42.9 lbs and 17/32 in tread depth.
- Toyo lists the Open Country A/T III at 30.5 in diameter, 44 lbs and 16.1/32 in tread depth.
§ 3
Which sizes are closest in diameter?
By the formula, the closest neighbors are 245/70R17 (+0.1%), 215/85R16 (−0.3%) and 265/65R17 (+0.3%). The table’s ±3% diameter window is a tire-shop rule of thumb, not a law or vehicle maker specification. Fit depends on the vehicle, wheels and suspension.
- 245/70R17: nominal true speed is 60.1 mph at 60 mph indicated; axle ground clearance increases 0.02 in.
- 215/85R16: nominal true speed is 59.8 mph at 60 mph indicated; axle ground clearance decreases 0.04 in (1 mm).

Q&A
Common questions
How many revolutions per mile is 245/75R16?
The formula gives 662 revolutions per mile. Toyo lists 682 revolutions per mile for its LT245/75R16 Open Country A/T III, illustrating the difference between nominal math and maker-listed figures.
Does the size identify load capacity and speed?
Compare the full service description, not just 245/75R16: Kumho lists 120/116Q for the LT Crugen HT51. FMVSS No. 139 requires the sidewall to show maximum load rating and, for LT tires, the load range letter. For passenger cars, FMVSS No. 110 says vehicle maximum load on a tire must not exceed its marked load rating.
Where should inflation pressure be checked?
See the tire and loading placard on the driver's door jamb. FMVSS No. 110 requires the placard to list the vehicle maker’s recommended cold inflation pressures.
Notes
Method and sources
Each number and rule comes from a source with the date it was checked.
- Sidewall = width × aspect ratio ÷ 100
- Diameter = rim × 25.4 + 2 × sidewall (mm)
- Revs per mile = 63,360 ÷ (π × diameter, in)
- True speed = dial × new diameter ÷ old diameter
- Clearance change = half the diameter change
Numbers are nominal: the tire unloaded, on its measuring rim. Revs per mile published by makers run higher than the formula. “Within 3%” is a rule of thumb tire shops use, not a law. Tire pressure: the placard on your door jamb.
