35-inch tires
A 35-inch tire has a nominal diameter near 35 in, but its size marking does not guarantee that measured height. Metric alternatives include 315/75R16, 285/75R18 and 295/65R20. The formula and the tire maker’s dimensions answer different questions.

Models: tire models and brands in the makers’ size tables we read. Sizes with a sheet of their own are links. A size in this list is not a fit promise: clearance depends on the vehicle, wheels and suspension.
§ 1
What counts as a 35-inch tire?
“35-inch” describes a diameter category, not a single size. Metric markings specify section width in millimeters, sidewall height as a percentage of width, and rim diameter in inches.
By the formula, overall diameter combines the rim diameter with the sidewall height above and below it. Few metric sizes land exactly on 35 in, so compare nominal diameter first, then check the maker’s published dimensions.
§ 2
Which metric sizes are near 35 inches?
The sizes below are within 0.5 in of 35 in by the formula. The rim groups separate sizes that require different wheel diameters.
Open the linked 315/75R16 and 285/75R18 size pages for more detail. For a larger rim, compare 285/65R20 with 295/65R20; their nominal diameters differ despite sharing a rim diameter.
- 16 in rim: 315/75R16, 34.6 in.
- 18 in rim: 325/65R18, 34.6 in; 305/70R18 and 285/75R18, 34.8 in.
- 20 in rim: 285/65R20, 34.6 in; 315/60R20, 34.9 in; 295/65R20, 35.1 in; 325/60R20, 35.4 in.
- 22 in rim: 265/60R22, 34.5 in; 295/55R22 and 325/50R22, 34.8 in; 305/55R22, 35.2 in; 375/45R22, 35.3 in.
- 24 in rim: 315/45R24 and 355/40R24, 35.2 in.
§ 3
How do published dimensions differ?
Mickey Thompson lists the Baja Legend MTZ in LT315/75R16 at 34.5 in tall and 12.6 in wide, with 35X12.50R16LT listed as its equivalent. Toyo lists the Open Country A/T III in LT285/75R18 at 34.8 in tall and 11.3 in wide. Nitto lists the Recon Grappler A/T in LT285/65R20 at 34.57 in tall and 11.5 in wide.
Flotation markings state nominal diameter and width directly: 35x12.50R17 means 35.0 in nominal diameter and 12.50 in nominal width. Other nominal widths include 10.50 in for 35x10.50R17 and 13.50 in for 35x13.50R20. Use the maker table rather than treating those markings as measured dimensions.
§ 4
What changes from 265/70R17?
Using 295/65R20 as the example, nominal diameter rises from 31.6 in (803 mm) to 35.1 in (892 mm), an increase of 11.0%. Width rises from 10.4 in to 11.6 in, while nominal ground clearance at the axle increases by 1.75 in (44 mm). These dimensions do not establish fit, which depends on the vehicle, wheels and suspension.
By the formula, an unchanged speedometer showing 60 mph corresponds to 66.6 mph true; 100 km/h indicated corresponds to 111.0 km/h true. The speedometer calculator shows the comparison. The 11.0% diameter increase is outside the ±3% tire-shop rule of thumb, which is not a law or vehicle maker specification.
At 65 mph with a 3.73 axle ratio and a 1.00 transmission gear, calculated engine speed falls from 2,578 rpm to 2,322 rpm. The formula-only axle ratio to restore the original engine speed is 4.14. The gear ratio calculator separates this mathematical comparison from vehicle-specific decisions.
Q&A
Common questions
What size is a 35-inch tire in metric?
There is no single metric equivalent. By the formula, 315/75R16 is 34.6 in, 285/75R18 is 34.8 in, and 295/65R20 is 35.1 in.
Is 285/65R20 a 35-inch tire?
It is near the category at 34.6 in nominal diameter. Nitto lists 34.57 in for the Recon Grappler A/T in LT285/65R20.
Are all 35-inch tires equally wide?
No. For example, 35x11.50R20 and 35x12.50R20 have the same 35.0 in nominal diameter but different nominal widths.
Will larger tires change engine rpm?
Yes, in the formula comparison with gearing unchanged. Moving from 265/70R17 to 295/65R20 lowers calculated engine speed by 9.9% at the same road speed.
