§ 1
What does 265/60R20 measure?
By the formula, sidewall height is 6.3 in (159 mm), and rim diameter is 20 in (508 mm). Nominal circumference is 102.2 in (2,595 mm), giving 620 revolutions per mile (385 per km).
These are unloaded nominal calculations, not measurements of a particular tire. The drawing and nominal size table show the dimensions separately.
§ 2
What do tire makers publish?
The maker table covers 16 tires from 5 brands: Firestone, Kumho, Toyo, Nitto and Mickey Thompson. It includes 11 LT and 5 P-metric or passenger versions, with SL, XL and E load ranges represented.
Their published diameters span 32.5 in to 33 in, versus 32.52 in by the formula: −0.1% to +1.5%. Published weights span 42.9 lbs to 56.3 lbs, and new tread depths span 12/32 in to 18.5/32 in. These LT examples are all load range E, checked October 15, 2026.
- Firestone lists Destination X/T at 32.5 in tall, 48 lbs and 15/32 in tread depth.
- Toyo lists Open Country A/T III at 32.5 in tall, 54 lbs and 16.3/32 in tread depth.
- Mickey Thompson lists Baja Legend EXP at 32.9 in tall, 56 lbs and 18.5/32 in tread depth.
§ 3
Which nearby sizes change the diameter?
The closest nominal neighbors are 285/55R20 at −0.5% and 295/55R20 at +0.8%. The table uses a ±3% diameter window, a tire-shop rule of thumb—not a law or vehicle maker specification.
By the formula, 285/55R20 gives 59.7 mph at 60 mph indicated and reduces axle ground clearance by 0.09 in (2 mm). By the formula, 275/60R20 gives 60.9 mph at 60 mph indicated and adds 0.24 in (6 mm) of axle ground clearance. Fit depends on the vehicle, wheels and suspension; use the comparison tool to review dimensional changes.

Q&A
Common questions
Is 265/60R20 a 33-inch tire?
Nominal diameter is 32.5 in, not 33 in. The maker tables list diameters from 32.5 in to 33 in.
Are all 265/60R20 tires LT tires?
No. The maker table includes both LT and P-metric or passenger versions, so check the full designation and load range.
What should be checked before replacement?
For inflation pressure, see the tire and loading placard on the driver's door jamb. For passenger cars, 49 CFR 571.110 (FMVSS No. 110) requires that the vehicle's maximum load on a tire not exceed its marked load rating.
Notes
Method and sources
Each number and rule comes from a source with the date it was checked.
- Sidewall = width × aspect ratio ÷ 100
- Diameter = rim × 25.4 + 2 × sidewall (mm)
- Revs per mile = 63,360 ÷ (π × diameter, in)
- True speed = dial × new diameter ÷ old diameter
- Clearance change = half the diameter change
Numbers are nominal: the tire unloaded, on its measuring rim. Revs per mile published by makers run higher than the formula. “Within 3%” is a rule of thumb tire shops use, not a law. Tire pressure: the placard on your door jamb.
