Closest sizes and effects
The ±3% overall-diameter window used by the neighbor tables is a tire-shop rule of thumb, not a law. Nearby sizes on rims from 16 to 18 in include 305/70R17, 285/70R18 and 34x10.50R17 among others.
Small diameter changes affect indicated speed, revs per mile and axle-level clearance. Use a comparison tool such as the size comparison or the speedometer calculator for vehicle-specific numbers.
- 305/70R17 — diameter −0.1% (−0.02 in; −1 mm); indicated 60 mph = 60.0 mph; revolutions per mile 596 → 596; ground clearance change −0.01 in.
- 285/70R18 — diameter −0.4% (−0.12 in; −3 mm); indicated 60 mph = 59.8 mph; revolutions per mile 596 → 598; ground clearance −0.06 in.
- 34x10.50R17 — diameter +0.5% (+0.17 in; +4 mm); indicated 60 mph = 60.3 mph; revolutions per mile 596 → 593; ground clearance +0.08 in.

Note 1
P-metric or LT in the same size
9 LT and 0 P versions in the tables we read.
No single model in our tables is published in both P and LT versions of 285/75R17; Table 3 lists both types side by side.
On trucks and SUVs, the load ratings of the tires on an axle must add up to at least the axle’s GAWR on the certification label (49 CFR 571.110).
Vehicles on 285/75R17: not listed yet. We add a vehicle here only from its maker’s own spec sheet for that year and trim.
The size your vehicle left the factory on is printed on the tire and loading placard on the driver’s door jamb (49 CFR 571.110). Pressure and load: that placard too.

Q&A
Common questions
Is 285/75R17 an LT or passenger size?
Tire makers' tables list only LT versions for 285/75R17 and no P-metric passenger versions. The listed LT tires show load ranges C, D and E.
Where do I find load and inflation info for a replacement tire?
FMVSS No. 139 requires the tire sidewall to show the maximum load rating and, for LT tires, the load range letter. See the tire and loading placard on the driver's door jamb for the vehicle maker's recommended cold inflation pressure (49 CFR 571.110).
How many revolutions per mile does 285/75R17 make?
By the formula 285/75R17 makes 596 revolutions per mile (370 per km). Some makers list slightly different figures; for example Toyo lists 614 revolutions per mile for one model.
Do manufacturers list which rims can be used?
Yes. FMVSS No. 139 requires manufacturers to provide a listing of the rims that may be used with each tire, and makers' size tables list approved rim widths.
Notes
Method and sources
Each number and rule comes from a source with the date it was checked.
- Sidewall = width × aspect ratio ÷ 100
- Diameter = rim × 25.4 + 2 × sidewall (mm)
- Revs per mile = 63,360 ÷ (π × diameter, in)
- True speed = dial × new diameter ÷ old diameter
- Clearance change = half the diameter change
Numbers are nominal: the tire unloaded, on its measuring rim. Revs per mile published by makers run higher than the formula. “Within 3%” is a rule of thumb tire shops use, not a law. Tire pressure: the placard on your door jamb.
