§ 1
What the size measures
By the formula 295/70R17 is 33.3 in (845 mm) overall, section width 11.6 in (295 mm), sidewall 8.1 in (207 mm) and rim 17 in (432 mm). The circumference is 104.5 in (2,654 mm).
The nominal revolutions per mile are 606 (377 per km). These are unloaded nominal numbers calculated with the standard size math; real tires measure slightly differently.
§ 2
What makers publish
Tire makers' size tables list 11 LT tires in 295/70R17 from 5 brands. Makers list load range E only; published overall diameters run from 33.3 in to 33.7 in versus 33.26 in by the formula (+0.1% to +1.3%).
Published weights range 59 lbs to 72 lbs. New tread depths run from 16.1/32 in to 21/32 in. Makers also list approved rim widths, as required by 49 CFR 571.139 (FMVSS No. 139).

§ 3
Closest sizes and changes
The neighbors table uses a ±3% overall-diameter window, a tire-shop rule of thumb and not a law. Sizes within 3% include 325/60R18 (33.4 in, +0.3%), 275/70R18 (33.2 in, −0.3%) and 295/75R16 (33.4 in, +0.5%).
Small diameter changes give small speedometer and clearance effects. For example, 325/60R18 is +0.09 in (+2 mm) so a 60 mph indicated speed is 60.2 mph true and axle clearance changes by +0.05 in (+1 mm). By contrast, 275/70R18 is −0.10 in (−3 mm) so a 60 mph indicated is 59.8 mph true and axle clearance changes by −0.05 in (−1 mm). Use the page comparison tool or the speedometer calculator for exact figures.

P-metric or LT in the same size
11 LT and 0 P versions in the tables we read.
No single model in our tables is published in both P and LT versions of 295/70R17; Table 3 lists both types side by side.
On trucks and SUVs, the load ratings of the tires on an axle must add up to at least the axle’s GAWR on the certification label (49 CFR 571.110).
Vehicles on 295/70R17: not listed yet. We add a vehicle here only from its maker’s own spec sheet for that year and trim.
The size your vehicle left the factory on is printed on the tire and loading placard on the driver’s door jamb (49 CFR 571.110). Pressure and load: that placard too.

Q&A
Common questions
How many revolutions per mile does 295/70R17 make?
By the formula it makes 606 revolutions per mile (377 per km). Some makers list slightly different rev counts for their models.
What load range is 295/70R17?
Size tables checked list 295/70R17 as LT tires with load range E. See the tire sidewall for the maximum load rating as required by 49 CFR 571.139 (FMVSS No. 139).
How deep is new tread on 295/70R17?
Published new tread depths among listed models run from 16.1/32 in to 21/32 in, depending on the model and tread type.
Where do I find the correct inflation pressure?
See the tire and loading placard on the driver's side B-pillar (door jamb) as required by 49 CFR 571.110 (FMVSS No. 110). The placard lists the vehicle maker's recommended cold inflation pressures.
Notes
Method and sources
Each number and rule comes from a source with the date it was checked.
- Sidewall = width × aspect ratio ÷ 100
- Diameter = rim × 25.4 + 2 × sidewall (mm)
- Revs per mile = 63,360 ÷ (π × diameter, in)
- True speed = dial × new diameter ÷ old diameter
- Clearance change = half the diameter change
Numbers are nominal: the tire unloaded, on its measuring rim. Revs per mile published by makers run higher than the formula. “Within 3%” is a rule of thumb tire shops use, not a law. Tire pressure: the placard on your door jamb.
